“It started with a game.”
So starts the trailer for one of the most ridiculous but amazing movies ever made. The Last Starfighter is the story of a hotshot teen, addicted to an arcade game that turns out to be training for a true space adventure, just like in the game.
This 1984 gem represents one of Hollywood’s first attempts to cash in on the arcade craze that was sweeping the nation, like Joysticks and The Wizard. And also like those two movies, it didn’t quite make the kind of box office history Hollywood hoped for (although it did inspire this great Onion article).
Instead, The Last Starfighter ended up as today’s Classic Video Game Replay.
