Our 15 Favorite Video Game Lunch Boxes

Wednesday June 3, 2009 11:11 AM

Finally, we’ve tapped into our inner children and found the perfect places to keep our video game food!

Some of these were sold mass market in the stores, others were promotional items, and a few sprang from the loving, devoted work of the most talented and free-time-overloaded video game fans on the web.

But they all have one thing in common – they’re Our 15 Favorite Video Game Lunch Boxes.

15. Super Mario Bros: The Movie – We have to assume that any kid who brought this piece of crap to school back in 1993 bought it unwittingly before the release of the movie. Or they got it at the 99 Cent Store. Or picked it up ironically at a thrift store in 2007.

14. Gears of War – OK, technically, this isn’t even a lunch box. It’s not meant for food or a thermos. But it could be used for that, and it just looked so freaking cool. OK, honestly, we had an irrational fear that if we didn’t include this box, the evil skull on the box would kill us in our sleep.

13. Final Fantasy X – While most video game lunch box designs emphasize action, this one defies the odds by going all out for mysticism, romance, and hair. Sweet, sweet hair.

12. Nintendo Power – Is there any word that better captures the combined forces of Mario, Luigi, Link, and Zelda than power? Nope, there isn’t.

11. Legend of Zelda (Nintendo DS)Link guards your lunch fiercely, like it’s really worth something. If only he knew you’ve just got another awful baloney-and-mayo sandwich in there, he’d be so pissed.

10. Everquest – Because girls need lunchboxes, too.

9. Q*bert – Sadly, we couldn’t find a bigger picture of this lunch box. Sorry, Q*bert, you deserve better. Way better.

8. Super Mario Bros. – ‘Nuff said.

7. Bionic Commando – classic art (above) and custom comedy (below) – either way, we’d be proud to show up for work with our Bionic Commando lunch box. Then again, look where we work.

6. Street Fighter II – Carry this baby into school with you, and you’ve found the perfect way to signal the school bullies that you’re one kid who won’t be f*@%ed with.

5. Atari 2600: Asteroids, Warlords, Yar’s Revenge – Now this is what we call old school. Not only does it embrace 3 of the most unsung but awesome space-based games in Atari history (we challenge anyone to a game of Warlords, anytime – consider yourself warned), but it’s also shaped like the kind of lunch box that working men would carry meat sandwiches in, to the tops of construction sites in the ’70s. Throw in a thermos with more random games mentioned, and you’ve got yourself a classic.

4. Dragon’s Lair – We wish we could claim that we took this photo in our own home and that all that stuff is ours. Eh what the hell, we’ll go ahead and claim it.

3. Nintendo GameBoy – Wow, if a girl made this, then we’re officially in love.

2. Fallout 3 – The Vault-Tec box is just about as cool as it gets. But the collector’s box below will do in a pinch.

1. Pac-Man – You can’t hold down a classic. We love how both of these lunch boxes depict what are frankly frightening scenes of what appears to be a relentless yellow monster cruelly hunting down and devouring adorable and colorful ghosts. No wonder childhood was so confusing for us.
