Ghostbuster Harold Ramis Turned Down Mario Movie

Thursday June 25, 2009 4:19 AM

We just discovered yet another reason why the mighty Harold Ramis is so awesome.

It’s not like we needed another reason – for goodness sake, the man starred in Ghostbusters and Stripes, co-wrote those two movies plus Animal House, and directed both Groundhog Day and National Lampoon’s Vacation. Now that’s what we call a legacy.

But one thing we didn’t know was that Ramis (who also just directed Year One) is awesome not just because of what he did but also because of what he didn’t do. See, while out recently promoting Ghostbusters – The Video Game, which he also co-wrote (does this man ever sleep?), Ramis let slip this little chestnut:

“(Producer) Roland Joffe wanted me to direct the Super Mario Bros. movie,” he told the Associated Press. “I took the meeting because I loved the game.

“I’m glad I said no.”

Sure, it’s possible that if Ramis had agreed to take on the Mario movie, it would have turned out differently. But then again, we’re not sure anyone could have done much to stop this atrocity:

Thank you, Harold Ramis. Once again – thank you.

The best part of the article – Ramis’ fantasy of what his next movie-to-game adaptaiton could be:

“A Stripes first-person shooter could be interesting.” Um, yes, Harold – that could be the most interesting thing of all time.
